How a lesson runs

A lesson opens on its scene: a few lines of dialogue between the level's cast, in Japanese with furigana over each run of kanji and an English line beside each one. The new words in that dialogue become the lesson's cards, and a word is taught only in the lesson that first uses it; later lessons that use it again ask it again.

Then come the steps: read each card from its kana, choose its meaning, fill a gap in one of the dialogue's own sentences, match pairs, and put a sentence's words back in order. On a device that can speak Japanese, some questions are asked by ear. 復習, the review tab, asks again on a schedule: the questions missed first, then the cards that have waited longest.

Kanji are written by hand, stroke by stroke, in 書き取り, on the stroke order each kanji page shows. Each level has mock papers in the JLPT's own parts, vocabulary, grammar and reading, and listening, each part with the minutes the test gives it.
